Artist Statement

As daily life becomes more deeply entrenched with the screen a fingertip’s length away, the hyper-accelerated consumer culture infiltrates our collective consciousness. My work responds to the growing accumulation of emotional, physical, and political detritus overflowing in contemporary America. I examine the relationship between private, psychological space and its public, edited counterpart, working intuitively across a range of media. My anxiety-fueled process starts with a ritual of collecting (things and information); data, memories, and histories, real or imagined, bear the mark of use, perception, or abandonment/denial. Mined from everyday life, my materials are a stand in for the fluctuating stability of the individual. The act of cutting, layering, and reconfiguring, discarded fragments become metaphors for human tendencies such as dependence and compulsive editing. These materials/ metaphors underscore the broader socio-economic systems in which they circulate throughout the masses.

I’m drawn to the wares of the day and the material afterlives that reveal where value is assigned or withheld. In recent years, I've often worked with objects, common materials and paint performing routines of care that oscillate between destruction and repair. A chair that is halved may be pieced back together; old shirts become a stretched canvas; a mattress frame or sofa is coated, carved into, or strung upside down. My paintings extend this logic of reconstruction. Thus, disrupting historical hierarchies of the medium. Domestic materials, traditionally associated with female labor paired with bright, pastel, or flamboyant hues, resist masculine conventions and negotiate their own presence within a male-dominated lineage. In discourse with their/its function, some of my work defies easy categorization, i.e. blending painting and sculpture while remaining attentive to the formal boundaries of the frame. These painting/sculptures press against and obstruct their constraints. Here, folded fabric, texture, stripes, text, and gestural marks, and text, emerge among layers of paint and/or material. My visual language draws loosely from abstract expressionism and fauvism with the anti-authoritative sensibilities of Fluxus and Dada. Contradictions arise, exposed, paralleling the lived paradox of those who are simultaneously aware of, shaped by, and complicit in the systems by which they live.
