The dichotomy between internal experience and external presentation lies at the core of Watkins’ work as she examines the world through a lens of psycho-analysis. Her daily practice moves between a range of media spanning immersive installation and abstract painting to live performance and conversations with the camera. This seemingly scattered process reflects a restless contemporary society born of attention deficit. The formation and decay of identity is a recurring theme throughout the work that highlights obsessive-compulsive interactions with the screen. Improvisation is a vehicle for the push and pull of materials mined from daily life such as used bedsheets or the manipulation of self. Watkins distorts her physical image to both acknowledge and subvert the act of posturing for public display and one's ultimate consumption. Her work implores viewer investigation, self reflection, and interiority in an attempt to relativize psychological disturbances at any level.
